Exploring Sun Liming's Award-Winning Toronto Seafood Cafeteria Design

Unveiling the Unique Blend of Luxury and Industrial Style in Modern Restaurant Design

Discover the innovative design of the Toronto Seafood Cafeteria, a restaurant that seamlessly blends luxury and industrial style, reflecting the modern lives of the East and West. This design, by Sun Liming, was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.

Sun Liming, the mastermind behind the Toronto Seafood Cafeteria design, believes that a good design should capture the relationship between space and customer needs. He argues that a designer should be more than a space creator; they should also be a food designer and understand the planning and marketing of a restaurant better than its owner.

The Toronto Seafood Cafeteria, located in Wuxi City, offers a unique dining experience. It combines a touch of luxury with a contemporary industrial style, reflecting the modern lifestyle of both the East and West. The design changes as one moves through the space, creating a dynamic and fashionable city atmosphere for all diners.

Various materials such as marble, tile, glass, mirror, copper, and mesh were used in the realization of this design. The restaurant covers an area of 920 square meters, while the kitchen occupies 137 square meters. The design presents a unique blend of slight luxury and stylish industrial elements, mirroring different city trends from East to West.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was the existing structure of the building, which did not provide enough room for the restaurant's operations. To overcome this, Sun Liming designed the tables and chairs according to the actual demands of the space. Additionally, the cooking area was far from several dining sections, so a centralized cooking island was introduced to serve guests effectively and quickly.

In Sun Liming's words, "Market is always changing, the same as the thoughts of operators. A designer needs a business operator’s vision to treat design, which means finding solutions to the operation, to the profits and to the sustainable development. Only by this, a designer could transfer himself from server to guide. So, the most important thing is that never stop learning and creating, growing up with your landlord.”

The Toronto Seafood Cafeteria design is a testament to Sun Liming's innovative approach to restaurant design, balancing aesthetics, functionality, and business considerations. It is a shining example of how design can transform a space, creating a unique and memorable dining experience.
